Toothpicks hold such deep roots in Japanese culture and society that they are depicted in traditional Japanese woodblock art known as ukiyo-e prints. One such print, crafted by the renowned ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Toyokuni III (1786-1865), portrays a remarkably beautiful woman delicately holding a toothpick. I captured this birdseye view of the toothpicks at our local izakya restaurant in Azabu-juban.
