About The Artwork

Limited Edition of 19. Crushing enhances the “object-ness” of the sculptural form created out of tearing and recombining a rectangular print. In the several editions I have done representing the landscape of the Southwest (Grand Canyon, Lake Powell and Sedona) the horizontal layers of sediment of different tonalities seem to dominate. The dimensionality of the surface needed to be brought out by crushing to enhance the vertical and three-dimensional shapes of the formations. I discovered that the paper tends to crush where there is less surface area, which also coincided with the way depressions in the rock surfaces tend to recede and shadows are cast. In Sedona, there is a “high water mark” all around the basin from a particular point in time when the deposits of silt were laid down. (Like a ring around the bath tub.) This was emphasized in printing the light color stripe, so that the “seam” of the 4 parts coming together at the center of the image would not dominate. Like so many editions of this period, all torn pieces were recycled within the image in such a way that the repeats of the torn shapes are not obvious. The outer tears at the top delineate earth from sky while the inner tears at the bottom suggest that this is just a “fragment” of a larger vista. The top of the image is offset from the bottom suggesting plateaus in the landscape and lateral movement beyond the image. The diagonal sides suggest perspective lines and space.

Sandy Bleifer received her B.A. in Fine Arts at U.C.L.A. in 1962 and worked as an Artist in Residence, an art teacher, docent and publisher of curriculum materials in the arts. With the support of “Space”, a seminal Los Angeles gallery under the direction of Edward Den Lau, she exhibited and sold her work from the early ‘70s through 1997. The artist's work is in over 200 private and public collections worldwide. Her personal idiom began with silkscreen, collage and an exploration of of paper: a continuing discovery into its complex nature and its ability to serve as a metaphor for the world around us. Early in her career as an exhibiting artist, social and political activism crept into the mix. Soon she began creating art installations that became a focus and galvanizing force for the reconsideration of major historical events: the Holocaust and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In the mid-1990s she focused her attention on a pivotal moment in Los Angeles’ contemporary history: the revitalization of downtown LA. Now in recent years, she is further imbuing her art with a pro-active agenda using interactive installations, video and community engagement with threads that can be seen in her prior aesthetic concerns – paper as a metaphor for life, environment and the human condition.
