Carved from yellow cedar and treated with beeswax and mineral oil, Involution No.1 is aromatic and smooth to the touch. The contours and surface are highly refined giving the sculpture a very pure feel. The natural spots and pockets present themselves clearly as the form is finely sanded. They add character and charm to the piece. It is carved from one block of wood. To carve out the outer form I used saws, chisels, knives, a file and sandpaper. For the concavities I used gouges, hook knives, scrapers and sandpaper. Involution No.1 is inspired by quantum physics and the observer as participator. The title also suits the "entanglement" theme in the piece. The concavities within the form suggest introspection and silence. The entire form, like others in the concept line, is meant to embody a certain character within the abstract shape. I hope to suggest "presence" and also "celebration of life". The "wood forms" line are carved from an exploration of relationship between parts within a harmonic whole. They use themes such as: biomorphism, symbiosis, social interaction and perception; to carry out abstract, structurally balanced solutions. Sometimes I fill many pages with sketches before I arrive at a form I choose to make. This stage of the process is where each form starts.
