I got the biggest inspiration from Eva Hesse. Her works expressed erotic and feminine emotion and she used instable materials like latex balloon, rubber hose, net, rope, fiberglass, etc.. and these materials transmit pleasure of being disassembled and disappearing as time flows. So what I realized after looking at her work was that every materials themselves can be powerful elements to convey opinions and emotions as much as they can be exquisite and aesthetic expression. In this work, I used metal which (I thought) can express the infrangible moral strength of women in abstract way. From this piece, I want viewers to feel the hidden strength that women have behind the weak appearance.

Julia Hyeawon Kim mainly focuses on materiality in her work to express in terms of feminine ideas and emotions. She uses various materials that have strong and wild characteristics such as metals, woods and marbles while using soft and weak materials such as fabrics, crank, water and coconut oil at the same moment. The process of her work starts with burning and smoking these materials. She also uses videos projecting onto the sculptures and a canvas to maximise the effects. Through the contrast of materiality, she does want viewers to see females’ strengths on the one hand, and weakness from their disregarded/unwatched lives on the other hand. Ultimately, she aims to expose women’s rights and interests from her work. Julia Hyeawon Kim was born in 1985 in Seoul, South Korea. She lives and works in Seoul and London.
