In my practice, I’m interested in the mundane, those things we don’t take a second look at because they blend into the background of our lives. Elevating the everyday to something of interest, peculiarity or fresh appeal is what I think about in my artwork. I made these pieces last year, back when toilet paper was something of a rudimentary nature, overlooked and available in abundance. It’s interesting how the value of something and our perception of it can change so quickly. It reminds me of the fluidity and temporal nature of life. Hardly anything stays still or remains permanent. A large part of my practice involves coating objects in thick layers of paint. I do this in an attempt to encapsulate the ephemeral or bring permanence to that which wants to shift and change. Life often feels as though it’s going by me on a conveyor belt, too fast to tend or savor that which is before me. I long for a pause… a lengthier time to be still.

Melissa Beck is a Los Angeles and San Diego based artist whose work encompasses sculpture, installation and time-based media. She is interested in the repeated use, routine, and familiarity of everyday functional objects and the human understanding of these entities. During her years living in Brooklyn, she was drawn to the excessively painted surfaces in the subway and old apartments. The phenomenon is quite common and thus overlooked by the busy New Yorker. Melissa observed these quiet and still entities in a bustling landscape and adapted the method to her practice. She is also and art professor teaching courses in design, color theory, sculpture and mixed media.
