About The Artwork

The Original Mother is a powerful freestanding sculpture of a black mother. Her concerned gaze as she watches us, her children, take our first adventurous steps, out into the dangerous world beyond. Sculpted in clay, bronzed and fired. A patina adds colour and contrast. Mounted with a copper rod onto a gorgeous wood plinth made by The Chippendale Furniture School. I wanted to sculpt the true aspects of motherhood. The pride and the fear. I felt it so important to represent women in sculpture, particularly black women. Her face shows the pleasure and torment of being a black mother in today's world. The everyday anxiety that something will happen to our children because of the colour of their skin. Though her face is fearful she is clearly strong, powerful, capable and full of love. I hoped to invoke a feeling of familiarity, care and caution in the viewer. She is our mother, she loves us more than any other. By saying 'be careful my child' she makes us feel a sense of belonging and that familial bond. We are cautious out there, we must protect her heart. We long to make her proud. She represents the mitochondrial mother to us all.

I'm an artist based in East Lothian, Scotland. I was born in Newcastle UK and have lived all over the world. I mostly sculpt using clay and metal works but sometimes dabble in other media. I used to be a teacher who worked in one of the roughest areas of Edinburgh. Think Trainspotting. Then in 2010 I took a sculpture class and produced a large sculpture. I uploaded photos of the sculpture on to to a well-known social media site and received over 1000 replies, mostly telling me that I should take up sculpture professionally. I left teaching and started out making small raku sculptures to make ends meet. Intermittently making larger sculptural works to sell. I have gradually moved onto creating mainly the larger sculptural works. I create art that represents real people, to show the beauty of the human body in all it's forms. My work tries to counterbalance the mysogonist practice of sculptors only creating sexist ideals of women. I aim to create work where people see and recognise their own body shapes for the body shapes of women they love. In doing this, I get messages everyday about how how seeing my work has improved people's body confidence. This brings me great joy.
