Playing with light has always been a theme in my sculptural endeavors. Here I also work with weight, slightly tilting the block form to accentuate the feeling of motion, as if the inanimate object is lumbering forward. Hence the title, which refers to the possibility of an animal being in there, somewhere... This animal can also be the artist or the viewer for whom an encounter with this sculpture could possibly invoke a moment of magic, triggering some primal urge to come closer and see what is within and beyond. Through this optical medium I intend to liquify light, momentarily distorting reality. There Is An Animal In Here... is part of the Pretoria Art Museum's permanent collection.

Since the Glass Art & Design department opened at the Tshwane University of Technology in 1994 Lothar has been instrumental in giving glass a “voice” as an expressive medium. In 2000 Lothar qualified as Glasschleifer (cold worker - cut, carve and polish of glass) at the Staatliche Glasfachschule Hadamar, Germany. Since 2001 his company, Obsidian Glass, offers high-quality design and craftsmanship of hand made glass products. In 2019 he concluded his Master Course parts I & II at the Glasfachschule Zwiesel, Germany. His sculptures and work are revered in South Africa and internationally in private and public collections. Lothar is represented in the Pretoria Art Museum, The Corning Museum of Glass (USA), Glasmuseum Frauenau (Germany), Glasmuseum Hadamar (Germany) and Glasmuseum Lette (Germany). Pocket Lens, a sculpture commenting on our digital lives, is part of the New Glass Now exhibition. This internationally acclaimed exhibition of selected contemporary glass works, celebrating the Corning Museum of Glass’ 40th anniversary of the New Glass Review publication, was recently shown at the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery, Washington DC. New Glass Now is currently part of the International Year of Glass festivities at the Toyama Glass Art Museum, Japan. Lothar has curated numerous glass exhibitions in South Africa. Most notably, the Blow Your Sculpture project, which has had several iterations over the years at the Pretoria Art Museum. He is currently curator for the United Nations International Year of Glass exhibition titled Fired Up! - Celebrating Southern African Glass Art, which will be held from the 3rd of September until 30 October 2022 at the Pretoria Art Museum.
